The Muddy Rudder Restaurant

The “Rudder” as the locals call it, has been serving guests since 1976 and has evolved into one of the most popular destinations for fresh seafood in Maine. Enjoy lunch, dinner or a weekend brunch in our restaurant while you enjoy river views. Our convenient location is ideal when you need a break from shopping in Freeport. Sip a drink at our bar or just enjoy a delicious dessert after a movie.

About our name

Legend has it, that many years ago, the tugboat, Portland slowly wound its way up the nearby Cousins River. Its destination was Yarmouth, and its purpose was to provide a place for good food, drink, and hospitality. A harsh nor’easter besieged the boat at its mooring and strong winds grounded and overturned her here.

Although the Portland is gone, its spirit lives on in the historic spot as we continue to provide our guests with great food, drink and, sometimes at low tide, a glimpse of the hearty old tugboat cabin itself. See our Award Winning menu for more history of our area.

Our Owners

Owners Matthew Witham and Jeff Miller are proud and excited to invite you to The Muddy Rudder Restaurant.  Bringing a combined 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry.  Matt and Jeff’s vision of providing their guests with exceptional food, coupled with impeccable service, has materialized on the picturesque coastline of Maine.  Jeff’s extensive culinary experience working in many of the finest restaurants in The Lakes Region of New Hampshire add a unique flare to an already balanced menu that also offers many traditional Maine classics.  Matt’s gregarious personality manifests itself through “The Rudder’s” friendly knowledgeable staff; eager to help, and quick to serve.
